Fair earns $25,000!
Freakishly good weather and a record crowd of 9000 people favoured Waiouru's annual Desert Fair on Saturday. The Army announced today that total earnings topped $25,000. Fair organiser Major David Watmuff said that after costs were met just over $20,000 would be channelled into community youth projects via the four L i o n s Clubs in the region. "We are absolutely thrilled with the fair," he said. The Army was especially pleased that after stormy weather for more than a week the skies cleared to produce a bright, sunny day. Highlights of the busy programme were a mock battle staged by the visiting Gurkha soldiers, the drag queen contest and the Skyhawk "attack" by four
jets from Ohakea. The drag queen contest netted $4200 with Waiouru's entrant, Stephanie Vine, winning with a $ 2 9 8 2 vote. The major prize of the day, a return airfare to Singapore courtesy of Singapore Airlines, was won by Taihape resident Julie Proctor.
