WHAKAPAPA SKI FIELD LICENCE CHANGE

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Limited have told the Department of Conservation that they wish to surrender their current ski field operators' licence. The company intend to then negotiate a new licence. RAL manager Dave Mazey said the company wants to carry on its extensive capital development programme but not under the present licence which expires in 1995. The present licence was granted in 1953 and then renewed after 21 years. He said DoC were also keen to renegotiate the licence. The rental the company pays at present is a set dollar value, decided in 1953. A new licence would most likely be tied to a percentage of the company's gross revenue, which would benefit DoC, said Mr Mazey. The company have advertised their intentions and have called for public submissions on the change. Submissions close May 5.
