The fair with flair
ALL ROADS LEAD TO WAIOURU FAIRGROUND The busy fairground in 1986 ... organisers are hoping for another fine day for next Saturday's fair.
Desert Fair was established as an annual fundraising venture in the early 1970's. From humble beginnings, including a few stalls and a few huncLed visitors, it has grown to become the major fund raising venture for the Waimarino. In 1987 over 8,500 people visited the fair and helped raise $17,500 for community projects. To ensure the whole region benefits funds are distributed in two ways. The bulk of the money, sixty percent in 1987, is given to the four Lions Clubs of the region to fund activities in their communities. Secondly, money is given directly to organisations throughout the region. If Desert Fair was simply another fundraising activity it would have as much appeal as a raffle. What makes it different is the carnival atmosphere generated by the sideshows, the military displays, the sporting events, the exotic food stalls and the hustle and bustle of hundreds of visitors. This carnival atmosphere undoubtedly makes Desert Fair "The Fair with Flair".
