MUSEUM DOES DEAL
Who said soldiers weren't wheeler-dealers? The Army Museum keepers at Waiouru have pulled off a great deal and we'll all be able to benefit soon. They've arranged to swap a surplus M41 tank for a very rare Sherman tank with the Bovington Tank Museum in England. They heard about the opportunity from an enthusiast who heard that the English museum was starting a collection of American tanks. Knowing that they did not have an M41, he tipped off the Waiouru people. Because they've got seven M41s, they offered to exchange one for a Sherman. There is only one other Sherman in running condition in New Zealand, but it's privately owned in Hamilton by a collector, Ross Hopkins. The Sherman is a medium tank used in the Second World War in Italy and North Africa. Built in America, it came out around 1941 carrying a 75mm gun. The M41 is a post-war machine first used in Korea. The Sherman will arrive later this year.
