Teachers fight together
Waimarino teachers, both secondary and primary, are almost 100 per cent against the proposed State Sector Bill in its present form. The New Zealand Education Institute, which is the primary school teachers' union and the Post Primary Teachers' Association - the college teachers' union, have joined forces to fight the bill. They are also calling ior other educational-
ists, some of whom are alrfiady taking action, to join with them. "We strongly condemn the State Sector Bill and support the Combined State Unions, . we call for the withdrawal of the bill," said both NZEI representative Jill Read and PPTA representative Glyn Hubbard. "There are literally hundreds of points of contention in the bill," said Jill Read. They said the State Sector Bill being sent to a select committee means little. "The committee could
recommend a million changes and parliament would not have to adopt one of them." Primary school teachers in the King Country area strike in protest on March 10 and 25. NZEI teachers will be joined by most nonmembers in the action, said Miss Read. Ruapehu College teachers plan a 'teach in' for Wednesday March 9. "We invite all interested people to come to the college between 11.30 and 1.30. Staff members will be avail-
able to go over any points of the bill to explain teachers' views," said Mr Hubbard. "We are servants, not slaves," he said, "this bill will make us slaves and there is no such thing as a well adjusted slave."
