Councillors to work for you
Reactions from Waimarino District Council candidates to the Bulletin election questionnaire have been varied. Most candidates have accepted the publicity as a good thing. Others have shown amazing indifference. Some have been shy and modest. The biggest single reaction has been along the lines of "but everyone knows me" which is, of course, not true. There are a great many voters who do not know all the councillors representing them on their present council let alone the people from the other two authorities. Our aim in asking the questions and publishing the answers is not to give the candidates electioneering space but to give the voter a chance to make an informed choice. It seems in past elections many people have voted on the basis of personality, with no idea of a candidate's philosophy or ability to be an effective representative. We should be voting for those people who are capable of making logical decisions, who are able to discuss and debate sensibly about issues and not personalities. The Bulletin questionnaire was set out much like a job application form because the District Council candidates are applying for a job. And you, the voters, are the employers. Obviously the motivation behind our questionnaire and today's candidate profiles is COMMUNICATION. But if our candidates aren't interested in it, perhaps they deserve a reciprocal attitude from you - the elector.
