Bulletin voting guide to come
Waimarino voters will be voting from their armchairs next month The District Council elections will be conducted by postal ballot between March 4 and 19. To help voters with their choices, The Bulletin is planning to publish candidates' views over the next few weeks. A set of questions has been prepared for each of the 25 candidates. Candidates who have not received a copy should contact Bulletin editor Robert Milne. It is intended publishing their answers in two parts in the editions of March 1 and 8. The first articles will cover personal background and community service records.
The second will focus on candidate's opinions. District Manager John Murrihy told the council steering committee this week that the number of candidates was a healthy sign that there was real interested in the make-up of the inaugural district council. The electoral roll is to be certified by March 1 and voting papers will be posted on March 4. Voting closes on Saturday March 19 and it is expected results will be known about 7 p.m. on that day. There will be about 2500 voters on the roll. The new council will comprise three councillors each from the Raetihi and Ohakune urban wards and five
from the rural or old county ward. Under the scheme of amalgamation there will be no community councils as in other districts to look after specific towns. Nor is it intended having any standing committees as in the past to handle matters such as works, town planning and finance. Among the questions the Bulletin has asked candidates are: * Why do you feel you are competent to spend other people's money (i.e. rates)? *What will be your priorities? *How will you balance the needs of your ward ratepayers against the good of the district? Among the questions only for mayoral candidates:
*Do you foresee any problems in uniting the components of the region? *How will you balance the parochial concerns of your separate ward councillors?
