Ruapehu summit climb on Sunday

Ever had a yearniRg to climb a mountain? Dreaming is one thing - getting out there and really doing it is something the Tongariro National Park is offering climbing enthusiasts this Sunday. The climb to the summit of Mt Ruapehu is being offered to the first 120 people who register, as part of this year's Centennial celebrations. The money raised from registration fees - $12 adults and $6 children, will be put towards paying for the on-go-ing extensions at the Whakapapa Visitor Centre, according to climb coordinator Simon Noble. Mr Noble said he anticipates this weekend's climb and another at the end of March to be

just as popular as those included in the park's Summer Nature Programme last year. "That's why numbers are limited and registration is essential," he said. "Unlike the summer programme we won't be taking along anyo n e who just shows up on

the day." Those who successfully complete the climb are presented with an attractive centennial certificate as a momento of their trip. Further information about the event can be obtained by phoning Mr Noble at Mt Ruapehu 729.
