SNOW'S HERE ALREADY

Snow fell on Mt Ruapehu yesterday for the first time this year. But no-one should rush out and buy their new season's ski wear just yet: the light dusting of snow on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu won't last. Reports from Whakapapa indicate that snow fell in the early hours of Monday morning. The temperature in the village was a chilly 3°C at around 10pm after constant rain throughout the day. The light covering is at its thickest above the Top of the Bruce at Whakapapa, while at Turoa it is thinly spread across the upper slopes. Is snow unusual at this time of year? Apparently not. "It happens," one mountain staffer said. "Nothing is unusual around here."
