Artificial breeding for rabbits
MAFTech Wallaceville plans to breed Angora rabbits using super-ovula-tory transfer techniques developed at
the laboratory for goats and sheep. Mr Alf Harris, convener of the project said that the Small Animal Breeding unit at Wallaceville was ideal for the purpose and
probably the best facility in the Southern Hemisphere for this type of work. Co-operating in the project is another MAFTech unit, Flock House, who
will set up a small commercial Angora rabbit unit which will also be used for research aimed at increasing the productivity of New Zealand bred Angora rabbits. Mr Harris said that this research is vital if the New Zealand product is to compete on the international marketplace. MAFTech will work closely with the Commercial Division of the New Zealand Rabbit Council who will be involved in establishing research priorities and provide some funding for productivity studies. Mr Harris said that MAFTech, in conjunction with the New Zealand Rabbit Council is holding a technical seminar at Flock House on 14 April covering such topics as efficiency of production and marketing. Rabbit breeders throughout New Zealand will be invited to attend this one-day seminar.
