Fight on for council

After a slow start t o nominations for the new Waimarino District Council, returning officer John Murrihy finally received 25 nominations for the 11 council seats and the seat Of mayor by the close of nominations at noon on Friday. There will be elections in all five wards of the council and five candidates will contest the mayoralty. The nominations for mayor are: Bruce Berry, former County Chairman; Con Heinold, present County Chairman; Colin Turner, former Ohakune Town Clerk and Garrick

Workman, present Raetihi Mayor.. The elections for the new council which sees the merger of the Waimarino County Council, the Ohakune Borough Council and the Raetihi Borough Council will be held on Saturday 19 March. John Murrihy said the high number of nominations showed there was interest in local government in the area. Early nominations had indicated there would be some ward seats uncontested. For the nominees in the five wards see classifieds page 13.
