Motor sport back in Waimarino
Motorsport will return to the Waimarino this Sund a y when the Taumarunui Car Club host the Wanganui and Taihape Car Club's Interclub Championships Hill Climb, to be held at a new venue, Shorts Hill pn Ohura Road, north of Raetihi. Other than a "brief visit by the AWA Clarion International Rally last winter, Motorsport has been absent from this area for many years. This is a far cry from the days of 15 to 20 years ago when the majority of Taumarunui Car Club members were local Waimarino residents and Hill Climbs on Pipiriki Road and Sprints on Middle Road were regular events. There was even a Grass Track Race Meeting held at Ohakune in the early '60s. In fact Motorsport was so strong that locals Alan Murdie, John Kerr, Jim Foster, Allan Burrows and Dave Johns entered cars in the Heatway International Rallies, as did Rob Brown of Taumarunui who will be the steward oversceing
Sunday's Hill Climb. Spectators are welcome to watch cars tackle the 3.5km sealed hill, racing against the clock and each other in the various classes based on engine capacity. Organisers ask spectators to please remember to keep clear of the roadway and don't stand on the outside of corners. Motorsport can be most dangerous to careless spectators. Cars expected to compete include Taihape's Phil and Ross Martin in their successful, supercharged Subaru four-wheel drive rally car.
