Rare breeds protected

Rare breeds of New Zealand livestock will now be m o n i - tored and protected with the setting u p of a new conservation group, The Rare Breeds Conservation Society of New Zealand. The inaugural meeting of the rare breeds group was held at Massey University over two days 1 and 2 February. Breeders and animal scientists from throughout the country met to form the group which aims to ensure the conservation of rare breeds and breeding groups of livestock such as sheep, cattle and pigs. The group was formed on the initiative of two Wairarapa women, Bobbie O'Hara and Helen McKen-

It was to report back to a gencral meeting within six months. The group's aims and structure was based on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust in Britain. The committee was to look at applying for affiliation to the British group. The steering committee comprises Ms Bobbie O'Hara and Ms Helen McKenzie, Dr Hugh Blair (animal science department at Massey University), Dr Mike Rudge (DSIR ecology division, Wellington), Mr John Annott (from Bulls) and Mr Bill P e e z (Palmerston North).
