Siren breakdown
The day the 12 o'clock timer at the Ohakune Fire Station ceased functioning - havoc struck the town! Reports of people working through their lunch hours because they hadn't heard the familiar sound of the siren heralding 1 2 o'clock came thick and fast. Chief Fire Officer with the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade Max Martin told the Bulletin that he heard of some people working until as late as 1pm before realising their mistake. He and others are working to correct the faulty timer that at one stage went off with every power cut in the town. Mr Martin said the siren needs to be tested on a daily basis particularly in winter, because of the problem of it freezing ■fl over.
