To West Australian Nick Mayers Ruapehu is what you call a 'real mountain'. The flat lander from Broome, two and a half days' drive North East from Perth, climbed to the summit in perfect conditions last week to be amazed and astounded by the view, the glaciers, the crater lake and the height, about 8,000 feet higher than anything west of the border.
