"Chic" new garages for Waiouru
A Ministry of Works task force in Waiouru is cleaning up the town with the regime centred around Waiouru's 'makeshift' garages. Spearheaded by MoW chief Bryan Jackson, the group of workmen are well over half way to completing the assembly of the consignment of kitset garages which will eventually totally replace the rusting sheds and lean- to's predominant in the camp - what the MoW jokingly refer to as the 'Soweto garage'
The MoW were commissioned by Dcfcnce last year to assemble 30 garages in 1988 Mr Jackson said, the results of a market survey indicates a need for 350 garages. The replacement of further garages is dependent on funding, he said. The low maintenance garages are ideally suited to the harsh climate of Waiouru and its mobile population, according to Mr Jackson. Sturdy wooden frames with locked-in trusses, airnailed together during winter, are fitted together through the summer on
concrcte foundations. Fibrelight boarding, rol-ler-doors and aluminium framed windows complete the picture. Mr Jackson said construction of the garages requires very little measurement and they are "child's play" to erect. This was demonstrated by three workmen last weekend who started construction at 10am on Saturday and were finished at the same time on Sunday. Garages can be erected for as little as $4,500 depending on the foundation. This is very cost competitive with othcrs on the
market according to Mr Jackson. A number of service clubs in Waiouru have tendered for the construction of the garages, with the proceeds returned to their respective organisations.
