Keen commuter for Waiouru
Waiouru's Plunket Nurse Judy Hope is so keen to work there that she commutes from Rangiwahia, north of Marton, three times a week to hold clinics and conduct home visits. Judy who is a registered nurse will begin an intensive four month course on plunket training in Wellington in February. A reliever will be found for Waiouru for the period she is absent. She attained her registered nursing certificate after three years' training i n Palmerston North and worked as a staff nurse at the city's Southem Cross Hospital for two years. Judy travelled overseas in 1985 on a working holiday and for nine months toured Europe and the Middle East. She is keen to take up the challenge that Waiouru - a community which had 6 8 registered births in 1987 - offers. Judy holds clinic at the community health rooms each Monday, and Tuesday moming while the remainder of the day and Wednesdays are spent on home visits to mothers and new babies of up to 10 weeks of age. The position involves close liaison with local doctors and the camp's military annexe. Judy said she forsees herself being extremely busy. "I'm really looking forward to becoming more involved with the community," she said. Former Waiouru Plunket Nurse of 11 years A n n Gunner took up a position in Kaikohe, in November. Mrs Gunner was also Plunket Nurse for the Taihape area.
