Ohakune swimmers warming up
The Ohakune swimming pool is open for business, with custodians Mary McCavana and Kath Day keen for the pool to be used to the full. The pool was to be opened on 5 December but problems with the weather and maintenance of the pool's filtering and chemical balance delayed the opening until last week. Ruapehu College pupils Bernard, Bobby, Mathew and Troy helped out with paintwork and scrubbing which was much appreciated, said Mary McCavana. Council plan for the swimming season to finish at the end of February though they may be willing to extend it if the weather allows said Mary.
Many Ohakune children already know that the pool has warmed up but very few adults are using the pool said the custodians. The large pool was an average 20°C on Thursday last week and 22°C on Friday, while the paddling pool was 23°C and 25°C. The pool has an electric heating system which operates
on a time switch. The pair of pool attendants hope to encourage more adults to use the pool, by staying open for adults from 5pm to 6pm. The pool will be open seven days a week from lpm. Adults interested in using the pool for a morning training session, probably
from 7am till 8am should contact either Mary or Kath. Another possibility is swimming lessons, which both Kath and Mary are interested in running. Both have had experience in teaching swimming. Lessons would be outside normal pool hours.
