Anglers be careful

Nylon fishing line discarded on the banks of rivers and lakes is a major hazard for wildlife, particularly birds, but even trout and eels have been known to

get tangled up. As part of a major research programme on the nationally threatened blue duck in the Manganuiateao River, a number of ducks were recently caught by a Department of Conservation team. Two blue duck were seen before capture to have nylon fishing line wrapped around their legs. The line impeded their movements and both blue ducks were observed to be lagging behind their mates before capture and removal of the line. Due to their aquatic habits the ducks are susceptible to having fishing line tangled around them. Raetihi Conservation Officer John Heaphy has made a plea to all anglers to be aware of the potential dangers discarded fishing line pose to our wildlife. He requests that any line for disposal be taken home by anglers.
