Chairlifts open for summer
Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, operators o f Whakapapa Ski Area, have decided to run their chairlifts during the busy holiday period to enable the public to experience the upper alpine environment in the summer. The Rockgarden and Waterfall 'Express' Chairlifts will allow easy access to the Knoll Cafeteria area where snacks and light meals will be served. According to R.A.L an estimated 20,000 people visit the Tongariro National Park over the summer months, many of whom are likely to use the
new service. "In addition to sightseers there are also participants in the Department of Conservation Summer Nature Programme and climbers looking to ease their journey to the summit area who will use the lifts," said Scott Lee, Marketing Office for R.A.L. "We are expecting to be very busy on fine days." The chairlifts will operate from 9am to 4pm from 26 December to 1 February. The service is weather dependant. Daily information can be obtained from most local accommodation establishments or the R.A.L. Customer Services office on Mount Ruapehu (081223) 738.
