Santa's seaworthy sleigh
The age-old Christmas story of Joseph and Mary and the birth of the baby Jesus was re-enacted by infants of Maunagarongo Marae's Te Kohanga Reo group before an appreciative audience last week. The nativity play is an annual event at the Marae and was this year held outdoors. Against a backdrop of native plants, a stable and manger, the story unfolded. Solid performances were made by the principal players - Tipene Mareikura as Joseph and Kataraina Cassidy as Mother Mary,
who arrived on a very stubborn donkey! Other characters included Baby Jesus - Riripeti Taurerewa Mareikura; Angels - Tomairangi Mareikura, Marama Akapita, Tania Hansen, Billy Ruka, Tekawai Mareikura; Readers - Sheena Mareikura, Ngaone Brown, Tomairangi Mareikura, Decadia Pakinga, Raana Mareikura, Tipene Mareikura, Marama Akapita; Shephards - Pipi Hansen, Sharles-Zane Mareikura, Martin Hansen; Sheep - Tewaiti Mareikura, Turuhia Cribb; Three Kings - Marino Akapita, Meki
Pakinga, Andre Taurerewa; Faithful - Raana Mareikura, Sheena Mareikura, Decadia Pakinga, Edna Hansen, Te Aroha Johnson; Crippled and Blind - Hinewaipare Limyock, Mariana Johnson, Aurora Ruki, Ebony Wood; Choir - Vera Wilson, Luke Akapita, Hara Thomson, Gabrielle Mareikura, Ngawai Akapita. The highlight for the children was the arrival of Father Christmas in a very unconventional 'sleigh' - in place of reindeer, Santa arrived in a boat pulled behind a car.
