Pipiriki summer
Conservation officers and park staff at Pipiriki have been involved in major clean-ups in and around Pipiriki township in preparation for the Summer Nature Programme beginning 27 December. Both Matemateaonga and Mangapurua Tracks have been cleared of scrub and slips that occured over the winter. Gas cookers and a gas fire have been installed in the John Coull hut, replacing the former chip heaters and wood stoves. Whilst the move cost around $3000, officials are hopeful that gas will ultimately prove cheaper in the long run and save on the costs of flying in firewood. Senior Conservation Officer Dennis McDonnell reported that visitor numbers were well up for the month of December, despite unfavourable weather during the first half of the month. A full-time curator for the Colonial House has been appointed. She is Pipiriki resident Georgina Hema, who will staff the historic building from Wednesday through Sunday and o n demand at other times. The Colonial House is a major tourist attraction in the area.
