50 years celebrated

Mary and Frank McDonnell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the home of their eldest daughter Mrs Mary Perkins in Raetihi on Sunday. Four generations of their family helped them to celebrate the day. Mary and Frank were married on the 18th December 1937 at Christ's Church Wanganui by Archdeacon Young. They spent most of their married lives in Raetihi until moving to Wanganui 5 years ago. Their eleven children were born and raised in Raetihi and, apart from four living in Australia, still live within the Wanganui, Raetihi, Ohakune and Pipiriki area. Frank was manager-driver for Raetihi Carrying Co before moving into logging native timber and bulldozing contract work. Mary worked for many years at Four Square in

Raetihi before moving to Wanganui. Their memories range back to the days when Frank drove the local buses to places like the Pokaka Timber Mill for weekly dances where Mary occasionally played piano. Music played a big part in family life with most of the family either singers or musicians or both. Some of them still carry on the tradition today.
