Army to entertain kids
A questionnair e completed by Waiouru residents earlier this year has paved the way for a teenagers' christmas activities programme organised by Colonel Bret Bestic, commanding officer o f Waiouru Army Training Group. The concept of the programme, to run from Tuesday 8 December through to 29 January, is to give the young people of Waiouru a choice of entertainment and activities to keep them busy throughout the holi-
day period. Each Tuesday and Thursday from 10am the old camp gymnasium will be opened as a drop-in centre where sport and recreational facilities will be available. In addition to the drop-in centre activities including canoeing, weapon safety, horse trekking, golf and computer classes will be run throughout the week. Teenagers will have the opportunity to spend a night on a local marae, tramp and camp in the Kaimanawa Ranges, take part in a car maintenance clinic and to go on a mys-
tery bus trip. Col. Bestic said the programme is designed so that it may be extended. If enough parental help i s forthcoming, the drop-in centre may expand and other activities programmed. The programme is self-help and can be successful only with the help from the general public, according to Col. Bestic. Although the programme is available only to Waiouru teenagers 13 years and over, Col. Bestic is optimistic that other communities will get the impetus to form their own activities programme in their respective areas.
