Personalised Car Kits
More European car buyers in New Zealand are now able to personalise the appearance of their vehicles. New Zealand's leading car design studio Top Town Spoiler World has extended its collection of custom-made Tordair body styling kits to include the Renault 21, SEAT Ibiza, Citroen BX, BMW 3-series, Audi 80/90 and Mercedes Benz models. And other makes and mod-
els are likely to follow. The Renault, SEAT and Citroen kits were designed by Tordair's Julian Tordoff, who is so pleased with the results, he believes they could be exported to overseas markets. The body kits for the BMW, Audis and Mercedes Benz are supplied by Kami of West Germany. Top Town Spoiler World was the first in the world to fit a
Kami kit to an Audi 80, which was among the stars of the 1987 Motor Expo in Auckland. Julian says: "The demand for dressed up European cars is growing and currently makes up about one third of our work. "We originally started with Japanese cars because there were a lot more on the road. But it should be remembered that the trend to dress up road cars actually began in Europe. "European cars lend themselves very nicely to subtle styling changes through the addition of spoilers and side skirts. "We are not looking to create way-out cars, but to personalise a car for the customer, to make it look more individual without going over the top." Julian is especially pleased with his own creations which have gone on the Renault 21, SEAT Ibiza and Citroen BX 19GT. He adds: "The Renault importer came to have a look and was very excited by the work we had done on the 21 and asked us to go ahead with production for his dealers. "The SEAT has come up extremely well, too. It looks a more aggressive car and there is a possibility that this kit could go to SEAT distributors in other countries. "And the Citroen BX 19GT is a naturally sporty car which now looks as fast as it goes - even when it's standing still!" It took Julian about 12 weeks to perfect each creation, with much of the development work going to ensure that production kits fit precisely and are of the highest quality in finish. The Tordair styling kits for these cars are all available through the dealer networks, or from Tordair's fitting workshops at Top Town Spoiler World in Manukau City and Hamilton.
