Police File

Ohakune Police are investigating a burglary of a house in Raetihi Road, Ohakune that occurred sometime between Tuesday and Friday of last week. Police have determined that the house was entered but that apparently nothing was stolen. ★ ★★ The driver of a car extensively damaged in an accident on Raetihi Road on Friday night is in Wanganui Base Hospital with moderate injuries. Ohakune Police attended the accident at around 9pm, in the vicinity of the Makaranui Sub Station on SH49. Only one vehicle was involved in the accident, where the car hit a fence. ★ ★★ A 17-year old Ohakune youth, Darryl Wayne Pickery, appeared in the Wanganui District Court last Monday on charges of disorderly behaviour and intentional damage. The charges were laid following an incident at the Ohakune Hotel two weeks previously. He was sentenced to a term of corrective training by district justice Judge E. Unwin. A 38-year old former Ohakune man, Adolphus Kohu, appeared in the Wanganui High Court before Mr Justice Ellis on 27 November, to appeal against a sentence imposed by Judge Unwin in the Wanganui District Court on 16 February. The appeal was against a sentence of four and a half years imprisonment on 12 charges of burglary. Mr Justice Ellis dismissed the appeal after finding that the sentence was not manifestly excessive under the circumstances. ★ ★★ Raetihi Police Constable John Robinson is keen to hear from anyone knowing of cannabis plants growing in the area or of suspicious activities that might be associated with cannabis growing. Mr Robinson seized and destroyed 15 plants from a concealed plot on the Pipiriki Road last week. He said the cannabis growing season is now in full swing.
