College cricketers cruise to victory

Ruapehu College cruised to an easy 97-run win over Athletic in Marton on Saturday. Before the match started though, it seemed that everything was actually going against the team. The weather was threatening, the team was short and the playing venue couldn't be found. Finally the match got underway, and Ruapehu elected to bat after winning the toss. This proved to be the right decision as the opening pair of Errol Perrett and Glen Koorey set up a huge partnership. Perrett was the more dominant partner, hitting three sixes and 6 fours before he was out for a stylish 70, with the score on 97. Koorey continued to bat patiently and shared good partnerships with Kerry Baker (11) and Wayne Marsh (20) before he became the fifth wicket to fall in the 35th over for a well compiled 48. Karl Clement and Glen Journeaux then upped the tempo throughout the final overs, with shots to all areas of the ground. Clement went for 20 but Journeaux

saw the team past the 200 mark, and was unbeaten on 26 when the team ended on 222/7. Of the Athletic bowlers, M. Adam bowled consistently to take 4-48, while W. Adams also did well, collecting 2-33. Right from the start the Ruapehu bowlers had the opposing batsmen on the back foot, restricting the runs and taking early wickets. R. Benoit with 22, £nd J. Te Huia 15, stabilised the top order a bit; but things were looking decidedly shaky for Athletic at 55/5 at about the halfway stage. Adams then took up the attack and pushed Athletic's total past the hundred mark before he was finally out for a well-struck 45. He was assisted by G. Calkin (15) and P. Murphy (12) in two good partnerships. However the end was inevitable and Athletic were dismissed after 35 overs for 125. Chief destroyer for Ruapehu was Marsh with 421; and there were also good performances from Clement who took 2-20, and Perrett who bowled 5 overs for just 2 runs, as

well as a wicket. So the college ends its competition season on a high note, and prospects look good for the success of next year's team. Thanks are extended to all 'players who participated during the season, be it regularly or one-off. Their efforts helped make it a memorable season for Ruapehu College.

Scores Ruapehu 222/7 (E. Perrett 70, G. Koorey 48, G. Journeaux 26 n.o., W. Marsh 20, K. Clement 20; M. Adam 4-48, W. Adams 2-33) in 45 overs, beat Athletic 125 (W. Adam 45, R. Benoit 22, J. Te Huia 15, G. Calkin 15; W. Marsh 4-21, K. Clement 220) in 35 overs, by 97 runs.
