Fire brigade water works

The Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade took advantage of the weekend's water supply shut down to d o some fire hydrant pipe l'aying last week. The firemen took turns, and time off their normal work, to sweat it out digging a trench from behind the fire station to the water main under the road. The hydrant will mainly b e used for fire brigade practices, removing the need to use a street hydrant, but will also be used for filling the fire engine water tanks. The main reason for the town supply being shut off though, was for the dam in the catchment area to be cleaned. This job also saw fire brigade volunteers involved. The job is done every 12 to 18 months and involves hosing away the silt buildup on the bottom of the dam. Seven able bodied firemen started the job at 6.00am on Saturday morning and spent three hours knee deep in mud to clear the dam.
