Larger, leaner animals required

This season, Waitaki has introduced a livestock b u y i n g plan which is dictated by true market requirements. Now, more than ever, it is essential to match up livestock procurement with market requirements. Waitaki's market plan is designed to provide products for the specific needs of each individual market. In the world's more developed markets, consumers are looking for quality wholesome foods which are quick and cdnvenient to prepare and which offer new taste experiences. The consumer demand for freshness provides good opportunities for chilled lamb, particularly in Europe, North America and Japan. Waitaki is increasingly providing its markets with

value-added cuts which give a better return to the farmer, requiring in turn a greater number of large lean lambs. Waitaki's market plan for the 1987-88 season includes: ★ Supplying Europe an and North American consumers with a year round supply of fresh chilled part-boned or boneless lamb cuts drawn from lean, medium to heavy weight grades (WX and YX), of good conformation and consistent quality. ★ Providing half the frozen lamb requirements for the New Zealand lamb Company in North America using lean lamb cuts sourced from predominantly YM and PM grades. ★ Continuing as a major supplier of lamb and mutton to Japan, requiring very lean lamb cuts sourced

mainly from WX grades. ★ Remaining the major New Zealand supplier of chilled and frozen beef cuts to Japan, where only beasts weighing in at more than 300kg are eligible. ★ Continuing as a major supplier of chilled beef and lightweight carcase lamb to Middle Eastern markets. ★ Expanding into new markets for pelts and finished garment leathers for the fashion industry, through its worldwide network of offices and agents. ★ Setting up direct trading links with the e n d users of our wool, including carpet manufacture, upholstery fabrics, knitting yams and high quality apparel. ★ Marketing top quality woolskin products, both in New Zealand and overseas, through its subsidiary company, G.L. Bowron and Co. Ltd.
