LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Baths shut The decision of the Rangataua School Committee at their November meeting, to keep the school baths closed at all times outside school hours was greeted with amazement ,and dismay by many parents whose children attend the Rangataua School. Hard work and fund raising by members of the community should have ensured a pool the community could all use. As it is now, the pool will not be used frequently enough to justify its cost. And it will remain unused right through the hottest part of the summer, namely the Christmas holidays. A feeling of frustration and anger at having the pool and not being able to use it has caused parents to protest.

There are Rangataua parents who would be available to supervise swimming outside school hours and during the holidays, so there really is no reason why the pool shouldn't be made available. Rosalleen Morris Sunday sports I write on behalf of the Waimarino Monsters' Fraternal to express concern regarding the scheduling of community and sports events and activities on Sunday mornings. Traditionally the hours between 8 a.m. and 12 noon on Sundays have been the agreed times for Christian worship among the denominations represented in the Waimarino. While the Ministers' Fraternal has neither the power nor the authority to

enforce a ban on Sunday morning activities b y sports and community groups (nor would it so desire such power), the Fraternal would point out to organisers that for many, especially children and young people, there is a tension created by peer pressure to neglect Church and Sunday school activities for sporting groups. It is a fact, that while sporting and community groups have beneficial and lasting effects upon participants, the Church has something to give the community as well, even if only at the minimal level of values and social behaviour. Come on community group leaders, how about a fair go! Father Bob Peck on behalf Waimarino Ministers' Fraternal
