Logs for town showpiece

The two huge totara logs that rest in the grounds of the Ohakune Club could become a 'showpiece' representing Ohakune's milling past if Ohakune Borough Councillor Thompson has his way. The logs are from a tree

cut down in the 1930s that were too big for the saws at the mill they were taken to. When the club's present premises were built the logs were to be used for an entranceway to the club, but this plan was later dropped. The logs were offered to the Maungarongo Marae for carving but they declined the offer. The idea put to council

was to have the logs mounted in some way, either on a cart of the type hauled by bullock teams or on a bogie set on rails. The display would possibly be sitecf on reserve land beside Mangawhero Terrace. Councillor Thompson said there is an interesting history with the logs, with the tree being one of the

biggest in the area at the time it was felled. The cost of the project was estimated to be about $1000. No decision was made at the meeting about the project but most councillors supported the idea. Mayor Bill Taylor asked councillor Thompson to present council with more detail about the project at the next meeting.
