Territorials tops!

The Territorial Forces officer cadets enjoyed an 80 percent pass rate in their seven week commissioning course that ended last week. Fourteen of the seventeen officer cadets that started the course graduated on Saturday at a ceremony attended by TFCC Commander Lt. Col Storey, the Commander Army Training Group, Col. Bestic and the reviewing officer, Brigadier Menzies. A large number of relatives of the graduation cadets also attended. The cadets were the second class to graduate from Officer Cadet School under the new Territorial Force Training system. The first was in February. The aim of the Territorial Force Commissioning Course is to give Officer Cadets the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare them for service, as officers, in the Territorial Force of the New Zealand Army and to foster the

qualities on which leadership depends. The first half of the ceremony was held on the parade grounds where cadets marched in slow and quick drill. Heavy rain forced the second part of the proceedings indoors. The most prestigious award, the Charles Upham Sword (awarded to the student who best displays the qualities of leadership, academic ability and physical fitness) was won by Officer Cadet P.B. Wood

who graduated into the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. Other top awards, the Territorial Force Advisor's Prize (awarded to the Officer Cadet whose performance in, and contribution to, the course is assessed as being the most deserving in recognition), was awarded to Officer Cadet S.J. Meggatt who graduated into the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps, and the Nemesis Trophy (awarded to the

team gaining the highest score on Exercise Nemesis) won by Officer Cadets Parker, Beattie and Goldsworthy. Brigadier Menzies commended the 12 men and two women graduating and advised them not to let the opportunity of future learning slip by. The cadets will be required to attend two further weekends training with their platoon and regular training sessions in the future.
