Records broken in mountains run
The Army organised round the mountains run held last Saturday attracted more than 1400 competitors, including two record breaking teams and one double record breaking ultra runner. Between 100 and 15 0 Waimarino runners took part in the race, making up men's, women's, composite, veterans', and children's teams. A large number of Army teams entered the event.Veterans, women's and children's team set off on their run at 3.30 am and the composite and men's teams set off at 4.30am. The fastest time was recorded by the open grade winners - the top Army team - who broke the previous record with a time of 9 hours 46m 39s. The Scottish Harriers Women's team also set a
record with a time of 12 hours 31m 26s. Dick Tout ran the 100 miles in 12 hours 57m and 26s, , a New Zealand ultra road record, by half an hour. During the run he covered 100 kilometres in 7 hours 13m 38s, four minutes better than the previous New Zealand 100km record. Tout started the run, which he described as the toughest in the world, at 4am to run along the Desert Road in a pitch black night with a head wind and cold rain. The 39 year old was confident he would win, and decided to run despite "having run too many ultras this year". Woman ultra runner San4ra Barwick ran the 100 miles in 18 hours 20m 29s. The 38 year old Takapuna Harrier set off at 9pm on Friday night, with her Contd. onP.17
