Improvements at 'Homestead'
Major extensions are underway to the Ruapehu Homestead, one of many visitor accommodation houses in the Waimarino, 4 kilometres south east of Ohakune at Rangataua. Proprietors Don and Sue Allomes operate the facility plus Ruapehu Outback Adventures from the homestead. The 'Homestead' offers visitors "the comforts of home in the heart of the country" and can accommodate up to 12 guests at any one time. 1
A two storey complex of four bedrooms, complete with ensuites and balconies with eommanding views of Mt Ruapehu, is due to be completed before Christmas. The Lockwood extension will adjoin the existing building and follow the colonial theme of Lockwood's 'Homestead' series. The extension is not intended to increase the number of guests, but to improve the existing facilities, according to Sue Allomes. Mrs Allomes said the majority of guests at the Homestead are skiers. Overseas visitors make up
around 40 percent of their numbers. "These people are used to quality wherever they stay", she said. "We can provide motel-style accommodation with the added attraction of staying in a private home." Also included in the plans is the installation of a spa pool and conservatory. The extensions will cost around $100,000 and are being carried out by local Lockwood contractor, Peter Richards. The Allomes' also plan further landscaping of their 10 acre section which boasts over 1000 trees and shrubs.
