College cricket
The Ruapehu College Cricket Team was unable to repeat its previous success in last week's game against Rangitikei College at Marton. In this week's game Ruapehu played the highly rated Marton team Suburbs at Waiouru. Ruapehu won the toss and elected to field. G. Koorey tossed for Ruapehu. It was a long day in the field for the college as two of the Suburbs batsmen took control and thwarted the bowling attack. The run rate kept increasing right to the end and they finished on 207/3 in their 45 overs with C. Calkin getting his century on the last ball. Earlier P. Rayned had made 60. For Ruapehu Karl Clement had taken three wickets for 28 runs. Ruapehu went to their
task with a vengeance, but unfortunately the wickets were falling too regularly. Things were looking grim at 40/5 but then Roger Parsons and later Glyn Joumeaux hit out at the attack to keep the score ticking over. Parsons 17, while Joumeaux was there at the end with hard hit 33 not out. The team was finally all out in 33 overs for 102, giving the Suburbs side a 105 run win. Despite the margin the game was an enjoyable contest and the college now look forward to next week's game against Utiku Old Boys. Results Ruapehu College 85 (K. Baker 21, R. Parsons 20, G. Koorey 12, J. Rangitawa 4-15, D. Hefferen 36) lost to Rangitikei College 86-3 (J. Tanner 40 n.o., L. Voss 29) by 3 wickets.
