First health fair success
The first ever Health Fair of its kind for New Zealand was held in Waiouru on Saturday and was deemed a fantastic success by organisers. Large numbers of Waiouru residents and people from the neighbouring towns of Ohakune, Raetihi and Taihape flocked to the Waiouru community centre to view the static displays and live demonstrations on show throughout the day. One of the most popular displays proved to be a machine used to register blood pressure and heart rate. The machine was on loan from an Auckland hospital and was used in conjunction with other equipment for making evaluations of the general health and fitness of willing members of the public. The tests were for human 'warrant of fitness' records. Other displays included those by the National Heart Foundation, Fire Brigade, Cancer Support, Weight Watchers and the
Rangitikei Branch of the SPCA. The Army's Dental Corp were "surprisingly busy" with their free dental inspection service, as was the dental nurse from Waiouru Primary School who handed out free toothpaste samples to all children checked. Demonstrations on the technique of cardio-pul-monary resuscitation by St John's Ambulance also proved popular. A large number of children and adults got into the spirit of a health fair by taking part in a 5km fun run around the camp. winners of the various age categories were awarded small prizes. Another display popular with the children was the Army's new Unimog ambulance - a fully equipped all-terrain vehicle used in conjunction with the regular ambulance service. After the success of the weekend, it is hoped that the Health Fair may become a regular event in Waiouru.
