Ski lodge rebuilding given "OK"

Permission has been granted by the Tongariro National Park for the construction of a ski lodge at Whakapapa, to replace one destroyed by fire earlier this year. The lodge will be built on the site of the former Ngauruhoe Ski Lodge at

Iwikau. Conservation Officer Russell Montgomery said a provision in the Park's management plan allows for the replacement of the lodge. The new building must comply with regulations concerning height, size and importantly, ap-

pearance. Mr Montgomery said all ski lodges in the park must conform with nature in colours that compliment the environment. The cost of replacing the lodge will be met by members of the Ngauruhoe Ski Club. The new building is expected to cost in excess of $850,000.
