LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Doctor subsidy It has been brought to my attention by the Council's current letter enclosed with my rate demand that the rates are increasing by (?) 18 percent. As a ratepayer I can understand and accept increased costs for the maintenance of services and improvements provided by the payment of these rates and I gladly and willingly accept these rising costs despite my moaning! But, I cannot and will not accept the "secret" expenditure of the public's monies to subsidise a medical practitioner or locum for Raetihi e.g. rent free housing and all maintenance costs which are supported by the Raetihi , ratepayer. The construction of said house was subscribed to by the whole of the Waimarino and to the best of my knowledge no other practice is supported in such a manner, e.g. Waiouru, Taihape, Ohakune or Hunterville. If you are seeking a permanent appointment of a medical officer for Raetihi you must approach the task in a more professional manner. Should a subsidy seem necessary then you should test the will of the Raetihi ratepayer first before committing their monies to such a scheme.
