Volunteers key to programme

Applications for volunteers for this year's Summer Nature Programme in the Tongariro National Park are currently being processed by Park staff. Conservation officer Russell Montgomery said the programme will be run on similar lines to previous years. Fifteen volunteers are needed for the summer holiday period from 27 December to 19 January.

The positions were advertised in Universities nationwide and the response from students has been very good, according to Mr Montgomery. "We wouldn't be able to run the interpreters' programme without volunteers and their work is very much appreciated by the public," he said. "They're all extremely motivated and enthusiastic- it's a shot in the arm for the staff as well". In return for their ser-

vices, volunteers receive free accommodation and a food allowance, with the added bonus of work experience in the national park. The theme for this year's programme is Tongariro National Park's centenary and the role of the department of conservation. Tongariro National Park staff will be liaising with staff from kaimanawa Forest Park and Taupo Reserve over the various walks and excursions in the district, in order to give visitors the best value for money.
