Ruapehu College cricket opens well
The Ruapehu College cricket team got the new season off to a great start with an 8 wicket win over Navy, at Irirangi, on Saturday. The team is playing in the Rangitikei President's Grade one-day (45 over) competition for the first time and, after last weekend's washout, were keen to get underway. Ruapehu won the toss and sent the opposition into bat. The two opening bowlers, Karl Clement and Craig O'Sullivan got stuck in and had Navy reeling after ten overs at 15/4. Clement took 2-5 off his 5 overs, while O'Sullivan took 2-6. Despite a quick onslaught by Chuck Nielsen, the remaining bowlers cleaned up the rest of the team for just 45 all out in under 20 overs. Spinner Kerry Baker took 4-17, while Huntley Wright finished with 2-6. The task of "one run an over" appeared relatively easy and Ruapehu set about their job at a good rate. After the opening pair went, Errol Perrett and Karl Clement flayed the Navy bowling freely and reached their target in less than 12 overs; Perrett making 21 not out and Clement 1 3 not out. Clement was awarded 'man of the match'
for his attacking batting and bowling, as well as taking a good catch in the field. The win was the "first in a while" for the College and it is hopeful that they can continue their good form next week against Rangitikei College.
