Wooden toys make comback
The well-made wooden toys of yesteryear are making a comeback with a vengeance and are proving more popular than ever, one Palmerston North business has discovered. Laurel McKendry and Helen Winslade, two of the ladies behind 'Toddle Inn', a cottage industry outlet that specialises in wooden toys and puzzles, find that long lasting quality toys are back in fashion. The ladies held a display and sale of their goods at the Ohakune Kindergarten last week which was attended by a large number of mothers.
Mrs Winslade said Toddle Inn' began as a handcraft outlet for local people. Profits from the business are returned to the community, by way of charitable grants to pre-school organisations. Mrs Winslade said the business is manned on a voluntary basis, with 12 ladies from the Palmerston North area taking it in turns to work a half day a week. The shop is unique in being the only outlet in the southem half of the North Island to specialise in safe, non-toxic wooden toys and games for children from birth to school age, according to Mrs Winslade.
