Health fair for Waiouru

The concept of taking ones car into a garage to obtain a Warrant of Fitness is not new, but how about taking your body in to be tested? This startling revelation will be put into practice during Waiouru's Health Fair, to be held Saturday 31 October. People will indeed be able to take themselves in to be 'tested' (their blood pressure and heart rate at least), on a high-tech piece of machinery on loan from Auckland. The machine is capable of making an evaluation of a person's general level of health and fitness after taking into consideration their weight and height. The health fair organised by the Waiouru Area Health Watch Committee, is believed to be the first of its kind to be run in the North Island. Activities will commence at the Community Centre in Waiouru at 10 am, with a fun run organised by the Waiouru Lion's Club. The run will be divided up into age categories with a number of prizes up for grabs. Various static displays and demonstrations from

health-related community organisations including Fire Brigade, St John's Ambulance, Cancer Support, National Heart Foundation and Waiouru's Plunket Nurse will run all day as well as fun activities for the public to take part in. The army's dental unit in conjunction with Waiouru Primary School's dental

nurse plan to have a mobile clinic which will offer free inspection and advice on the day. WAHWC spokesman Peter Bright said organising the Health Fair was "quite a project". "We are very fortunate to have the full support of the Army who have got right in behind us," he said.
