Trout no doubt
Trout every other day keeps the doctor away could be the next health fad, at least in good fishing areas like the Waimarino. A newly discovered substance called Omega 3 found in fish such as trout is a group of unsaturated fatty acids with special health giving properties. Omega 3 is found in all fish but more so in varieties with rich flesh including trout, salmon, skipjack tuna and Kahawai. Lean fish has lower levels. According to nutritionist Dr Joyce Nettleton, who was in New Zealand recently to lecture on her Omega 3 findings, studies have shown that Omega 3 guards against heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels in blood, reducing blood clotting tendency, cutting trigyceride fat levels and possibly keeping blood pressure low.
So now when you're out for your healthy dose of fresh air and exercise casting a fly, you can look forward to a further boost to your health if you happen to land an Omega 3 capsule, in the shape of a rainbow. Danish researchers have found that amongst Eskimos of Greenland heart and blood vessel disease are almost non-existent. This is despite their diet containing as much protein, cholesterol and fat as their westem counterparts. The difference between Westerners' diets and Eskimos' is the type of fat the Eskimos eat. Their diet includes more polyunsaturated fats which come from fish and fish eating marine animals which are rich in Omega 3. The average New Zealander doesn't eat much trout and only about eight kilograms of fish overall per year. Dr Nettleton says we
should eat fish about three times a week to get the benefit of Omega 3. What's all this got to do with the price of fish? (or trout?), well the price of fish is up around $15 to $20 per kilo, while a trout fishing licence for the 1987/88 season is around $27.
