Park Attack

"The worst case of vandalism ever" was how TNP officials described the latest incident of outright delinquency by persons unknown who carved up an area of park adjacent to Mangawhero Lodge, on the Ohakune Mountain Road. The area has been hard hit in recent months and has been the target of vandals numerous times this year. The most recent incident was barely four weeks ago. Senior Conservation Officer Lisle Irwin said this time, the damage to the reserve is horrific. What officials suspect to be a fourwheel drive vehicle gouged deep furrows into the turf which had been made very wet from recent heavy rain. Mr Irwin said the worst areas are 15 -3 Ocm deep. The damage was apparently done sometime Saturday night. "It must have been a bigger vehicle to make such a mess," said Mr Irwin. "The whole grass area is churned up very badly - normally cars just damage the surface while this vehicle has dug up huge chunks of earth." Police are investigating the incident.
