LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Milk prices During the week of the 21 September I advertised, in your paper, a reduction of 10 cents on a one litre carton of milk. I was notified on the Wednesday that I was unable to do this as explained in the following excerpt from Mr H.G. Turnbull, the general manager of the NZ Milk Board. I apologise, through your paper, to the other milk retailers, and the home delivery services in the area. "The Government has stated that supermarkets will be prevented from discounting below the minimum price as a primary measure to protect the home delivery service from predatory pricing or unfair price competition by supermarkets. Each milk processor will have an approved home delivery price applying to the processor's base area for milk in bottles and milk in alternative packaging. Supermarkets will not be able to sell milk to consumers discounted by more than 2 cents per 600ml glass bottle or 3 cents per litre in alternative packaging, from the home delivery price applicable to the particular processor. The Board has been charged by Government with strictly enforcing this provision until a new Milk Act is in place. The effect of these changes are that designated supermarkets and bulk users are free to make their own arrangements for their supply of milk from any processor as from 1

September 1987, but minimum prices will apply to saies to consumers by supermarkets."

Rangataua sewage scheme I would like to add my voice to the Rangataua sewage scheme debate. My family has owned a house in Rangataua for 15 years. We value the place for its quiet rural character. If only Waimarino County Council would keep the drains in running order our water and sewage arrangements would be quite adequate. My feeling, from various meetings and talking to others is that most Rangatauans feel the same. I suspect that would-be-

developers rather than residents of Rangataua are pushing for the proposed new sewage scheme. Or has it gone further than a proposal? There are plenty of areas around Ohakune already ear-marked for ski-boom property development. Let those who wish to make money invest in those areas. This family at least wants Rangataua gentle and peaceful the way it is. We will not take it kindly if Waimarino County Council makes a decision we don't want and then sends us the bill for it. Babies and Toddlers restraints We have had an inquiry from the local Plunket Society about child restraints for supermarket trolleys. At the moment these are being developed by the Auckland Foodstuffs group and the New Zealand Plunket Society and are still in the process of being evaluated. These restraints are for toddlers - not babies. In the meantime may I please ask the parents that let their children stand up on the trolley seats to please, please, refrain from letting this happen. It is only a matter of time beCont'd on p. 4

fore someone gets seriously hurt. May I also ask the person that keeps removing the mattresses from the baby trolley to return them. They are of no monetary value but I am sure the babies that use them would rather use a mattress than a wire cage. Alan Murdie Ohakune New World
