New season of stock sales
The first Raetihi stock sale for the 1987/88 season was held last Thursday, attracting good support from outside buyers and locals. The market was up to current out-of-area saies with the standard of stock being excellent. The sale was described as a good start to the season
having regard to the current strength of the New Zealand dollar. More stock was offered at this sale than at the same time last year. Prices ranged from $280 to $380 for yearling cattle, with good two year olds fetching $500 plus and xnedium quality fetching $420 to $500. Among two year old cattle on offer were: 25 bullocks from Brian Eades fetching $530 and 14 at $537; Morris Cole, 26 two yr, $500; Brian Eades 23 at $525 and 26 at $500; W.R. & L.P. Eaton, 13 at $465. Fifteen two year heifers on offer from B.J. & Z.E. Chambers fetched $270. Prices for yearling steers included: L.J. Proude, 37 Simmental cross steers at $350; Malrex Logging Co, 19 steers at $331; L.J Proude, 36 Charolais cross steers at $387 and 33 steers at $305; S.D. Lilburn 11 steers at $300. Yearling heifer prices on the day included $243 each
for 15 Charolais cross from L.J. Proude; S.D. Lilburn, 38 yearling heifers $191 and 29 Angus heifers at $192 and 15 white faced heifers at $215. Ewes and lambs all counted, from Garland Farm fetched $9.40, and dry ewes, March shorn from Ohutu Grazing Co., made $16.30.
