Raetihi Rangers keep coach happy

Raetihi Rangers' coach1 John Compton was tickled pink with his team aftex they brought home the Ruapehu Hockey Association's shield from last weekend's competition. They emerged the top team in the senior women's section of the competition. Mr Compton who has been coaching the team since 1977 (which still has two or three of the original players), said he was well pleased with the team who also won the opening day cup by a substantial margin and came second in the closing day competition. Eight teams from Taihape, Waiouru, Ohakune and Raetihi took part in the day's events. The team travelled to Taupo earlier this year and had a comfortable win against the local team and beat the team again recently when Taupo played them on Raetihi's own ground. The team travelled less this year than in previous years, according to Mr Compton, who said the players participate for the sheer enjoyment of the" sport. "The social impetus is always there," he said. Rangers currently have a hard core squad of 14 members who practice at least once a week.
