Tour to Australia
During the August school holidays, members of Ruapehu College rugby and netball teams, with their parents and teachers, worked to raise money for the proposed 1988 teams visit to Australia. One team of workers was at Winstones Pulp Mill constructing pallets under contract, while another team removed a massive amount of sheep manure from an area under John Sommerville's shearing shed. These activities are part of a fundraising programme plaimed to raise the finance necessary to take the 38 students on a 10 day tour including Sydney but focussing on Brisbane during July-August next year. The itinerary, not yet finalised, includes games against Australian Secondary Schools. Tour members have made a deposit and are paying a weekly sum to provide a basis for fund raising. Any money raised by the group goes into a team fund for travel, accommodation and uniforms. Through the generosity of the local communities, and people and businesses who have provided work, money raised so far has reached nearly $15,000. The group are very grateful for the community support; Other fundraising activities planned by the committee are raffles, batons up, a sponsored work day, and discos. Offers of work have come in and students have another shearing shed to clean out, pinecones to collect, a boat to sand, and
sheep manure to sell. Orders for sheep manure are being taken at the College office. The main event for Term 3 at Ruapehu College are the Senior Exams, both internal and external and for all senior students that should be their most important consideration. ★★★ During Term 3 all students who have not had the opportunity to have a days skiing will be offered the chance. This is one of few colleges that are able to offer this opportunity and at a reasonable cost. ★★★ Ruapehu College welcomes new staff this term. Mr D. Friar is a permanent appointment in the Art area. Mr N. Shepherd is running the transition and work exploration department, Mrs P. Frew is relieving in the Home Economics area and Mrs L. Ryland is taking Senior Chemistry. With the present shortage of teachers in New Zealand the school has been fortunate in finding competent people to fill these positions. The staffing situation for 1988 looks promising with some very experienced teachers applying for positions which will be available. Promotions within the school include Mrs Buck to Head of Science, and Mrs George to PR3 Dean of Girls. At the moment applications are being received for other positions available and interviews will take place next week.
