Hockey team scores

"A real achievement", was how the Ohakune Rangers women's hockey team described their success in winning the runners-up cup at last weekend's annual five-a-side tournament at Owhango. Seventy-seven teams of men and women from as far afield as Warkworth converged on the King Country for the event. The Rangers team of Karen Cranston, Lyn Fetzer, Monique Webster, Jill Evans and Raewyn Evans played exceptionally well against tough competition, winning their games against Douglas, Piopio and Castlecliff 3-0, nil all and 2-0, to make it to the quarter finals. They won their next two games, against Taumarunui High School Old Girls and Kaierau A' to put them in the finals but were beaten by Owhango 'A' 2-0, narrowly missing taking the top placing in the women's section. The secret to their success must be that all but one of the team are related. Surprisingly only one member had played any hockey during the year prior to the tournament. An Ohakune men's team and Raetihi Rangers wom en's team also competed in the tournament but were unplaced.
