District manager appointed

Following interviews of applicants for the position of District Manager Designate for the Waimarino combined council last Monday, an appointment has been made. John Murrihy, currently Acting County Manager for Waikohu County of the East Coast, will take up the position on 16 November. Mr Murrihy is married and has two children. ★ ★★ Ohakune Borough Councillors praised highly the work of individuals and organisations, in helping to make this year's Ohakune Art Awards a great success and a major drawcard to the Waimarino. The support of sponsors was again acknowledged

and the "untiring work and generosity" of Ohakune residents Bea and Dot Barnes. Cr Ellen Gould reported that the number of viewers of the exhibit was up on last year and said it was an excellent community effort. Cr Gould commented that something special could be planned for next year's Awards, to mark their tenth anniversary in the Waimarino. ★★★ Former AA Information Officer Catherine Dodd and businessman John Sandford were invited to attend the next full meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council and following supper when the Council will acknowledge their work and effort in running the

Ruapehu Region Information Office in the past. The appointment of a new Information Officer has been made and the office will re-open under the AA as from 1 October. ★ ★★ Mayor Bill Taylor accused the Wanganui United Council of being derelict in its duty, in a letter he wrote after the recent cancellation of a meeting, the second such occurrence this year. Mr Taylor said he was "very annoyed" that the United Council were not meeting and said it is statutory that it meets five times a year, which hasn't been the case this year. Mr Taylor said the reason given for cancelling was a lack of business for discussion.
